Kentucky Bluegrass is the most popular lawn grass in the United States. The aggressive and adaptable grass spreads quickly. It's hardiness, with the exception of a low tolerance to drought, and lush appearance made it a favorite for Landscapers. Yet, this grass, named for it's blue flowers, is not a native, instead it is an invader from Europe.
Brought over on the first ships the grass took root and never looked back. Along with another invader, the dandelion, Kentucky Bluegrass spread throughout the country displacing native plants and establishing its dominance. Supposedly the Native Americans called it "white man's tracks" because it followed the settlers as they spread through the land.
While its origin is foreign it is now part of America and it's heritage so that while it is a foreign invader, it has become an American.
